Devils edge Isles 2-1 in opener

October 10, 2008   ·   Hasan   ·   Jump to comments

New Jersey Devils' Patrik Elias, center, sits atop of New York Islanders' goalie Joey MacDonald (35) after colliding with Islanders' Richard Park (10) and scoring the game-winning goal in the second period during an NHL hockey game at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008. The Devils defeated the Islanders 2-1.

In a tense game, the Devils did what they failed to do so many times last year – holding off the New York Islanders down the stretch to win on Opening Night by a score of 2-1.

Early on it looked as if it was going to be a rerun of numerous Devil-Islander games in 2007-08 as the Devils dominated but couldn’t score against Isles backup Joey McDonald, who was splendid again after he perplexed the Devils late last season in a 50-save performance.  And the Islanders took advantage of a break when Doug Weight’s centering pass hit Paul Martin and the Islanders scored on the power play at 9:49 of the first period.  Zach Parise tied the game just three minutes later with his own power play goal, off of assists from Martin and David Clarkson.

And the game’s pivotal moment was still yet to come later in the period when Colin White got beat and had to haul down Isles rookie Kyle Okposo, leading to a penalty shot.  As usual however, Martin Brodeur was up to the task stoning Okposo and keeping the score tied.

It seemed as if the rapid-fire pace of the game would continue when Patrik Elias scored just 29 seconds into the second period, driving hard to the net and putting home a Brian Gionta pass.  Brian Rolston also got an assist on Elias’s goal, which turned out to be the final one of the game.  Brodeur would take care of the rest, making 21 of his 25 saves in the final two periods of the game and the Devils took a step towards putting last season behind them by beating an Islanders team that had their number in 2007-08.

The three stars were Brodeur (25 saves), Elias (1 G, +1) and Parise (1 G).

Other thoughts: Apparently Lou Lamoriello’s back to the future theme hasn’t stopped with Rolston and Bobby Holik’s respective returns.  Much to the delight of most Devils fans, Rock and Roll Part 2 is back as the goal song.  As much as I thought Devil fans made too big a deal about the goal song I have to admit R and R did fit like a glove.  On the negative I guess the Devils want to try to emulate Dancing Larry with their own fat dope dancing and stripping in the stands for the entire game.  And though I love the Chico Eats segments, having a rerun of something that was done last year on the board doesn’t do much for me, but at least it provided entertainment for those that hadn’t seen him eat zeppoles before.

As far as the pregame…do we really have to see Milena Govich again?  She should have been retired after singing the anthem at Game 5 of the playoffs last year.  Arlette should be there for Opening Night anyway.  Having the players come out to smoke seemed silly…where was the fire coming out of the entrance the way it did last year?   And why introduce the players on the roster, culminating with Marty THEN introduce the scratches?  Talk about awkward timing.
