Rangers are still the Devils’ daddy

October 13, 2008   ·     ·   Jump to comments

New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur (30) can't stop a goal as New York Rangers center Aaron Voros (34) struggles with New Jersey Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador in the second period of an NHL hockey game at Madison Square Garden in New York, Monday, Oct. 13, 2008. Voros was credited with scoring the goal.

After the Rangers dominated the Devils in 2007 by winning 11 out of 13 games both teams’ rosters changed, even Marty’s mask has changed - but for Devils fans after one game in 2008 the results remained strikingly similar against the New York Rangers.  Ex-Devil Aaron Voros scored twice on the power play to lead the Rangers to a workmanlike 4-1 triumph at MSG, keeping the Rangers’ record spotless at 5-0 while dropping the Devils to 2-1.

Funny how things go…I was excited about the game for most of the day until the Alexei Cherepanov news.  After that, I just wanted the game to be over with and to get back to a sense of normalcy.  It did take a few minutes to get into the game, but only another few minutes to be annoyed when MB30 gave up an Adam Foote-like softee (every Devils fan knows the reference) to Brandon Dubinsky.  Sorry Chico, I don’t care whether Johnny Oduya deflected the puck, there was plenty of time for Martin Brodeur to make an adjustment there.

After the period I was in full Joe Benigno like rant mode as the Rangers outshot the Devils 11-5 making the Devils look like they were skating in mud, and it’s probably a good thing I didn’t see Voros taunt the Devils after his goal in the second period or I would have blown up like a top.  Who would have thought it would take Voros one game to morph into Sean Avery II?  I guess the good news is I picked up Voros for my fantasy team though I didn’t play him tonight.

And for the coup de grace, after the Devils finally showed some emotion and life in the second period and John Madden cut the lead to 2-1, Voros scored again on a contreversial PP at the start of the third period, which was awarded after an obvious Ranger goaltender interference was missed and Oduya got sent to the box for sticking up for his goalie.

The only thing left to look forward to after that is Brent Sutter‘s postgame press conference, which you know will have fireworks.  Especially after he reluctantly (in consultation with captain Langenbrunner and GM Lamoriello) gave the team Sunday off after the team played on Friday and Saturday.

While it’s a long season and the Devils will surely pick it up after tonight, I’m not sure the team will get another day off until Christmas at this point after that display of non-emotion, especially in the first period.

This is one of those things that feels more mental than anything else.

The tools to beat the Rangers are there… but the will is sapped.

I have the same problem in my adult league when dealing with a certain team. While I can play my ass off, the rest of my team would vary, misplacing their energy and just not showing up.

Oh well… at least this year they can only beat us a maximum of 10 times.
