Didn’t you just figure

With the recent spate of Devil injuries, I suppose it was only a matter of time before the unthinkable happened.

Martin Brodeur left tonight’s game against the Thrashers due to injury.

Apparently it’s only a bruised left elbow according to Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and it didn’t prevent the Devils from wasting Atlanta 6-1 at the Rock or even Brodeur from getting the win since he left early in the second period with the Devils in front and they never lost the lead after.  His status for Monday’s game against the Sabres (and beyond) is uncertain but early indications are that hell hasn’t literally frozen over in Devil Nation just yet.  Although I definitely had one of those WFAN Joe Benigno-like ‘Are you kidding me?!’ moments when I saw briefly the report on Channel 7 that he got hurt.  And yet on some level it almost wasn’t a surprise since it seems like the Devils have been averaging one player on IR per game.

Ironically the game had good news and better news for Devil fans aside from the Brodeur scare, the good news being that the team continued its recent offensive spurt with six goals in the first two periods (including five in the second), all against Atlanta goalie Johan Hedberg.  The better news being that the D picked it up, allowing only 20 shots and one meaningless goal in the third period by Slava Kozlov.  Also encouraging was the performance of Kevin Weekes, who stopped 14 of 15 shots in his first game action since the preseason a month ago.

Offensively for the Devils, Zach Parise scored twice and Nicklas Bergfors, Patrik Elias, Brian Gionta and even Jay Pandolfo added goals to the Devils attack.  Danius Zubrus had two assists and was a +3.  Johnny Oduya picked up some of the slack on the blueline with three assists and a +4 in 23:02 of icetime.

BoNY Three Stars:

  1. Zach Parise (2 G, +1)
  2. Johnny Oduya (3 A, +4)
  3. Kevin Weekes (14/15 Saves)
