Rangers team breathes sigh of relief: Sundin a Canuck

December 18, 2008   ·     ·   Jump to comments

Former Nordique, former Leaf, now a Vancouver Canuck.  Current reports from TSN say he has signed a $10M pro-rated contract for one year.

“FINALLY!!”, I say.  It’s about damned time he chose between the Rangers and the Canucks.

However, the one year deal may just make him a temp out west.  My gut tells me that Mats really wanted to play in the Big Apple… but the Rangers just don’t have the room, both Cap-wise and position-wise (they already have ~$41M tied up in 10 players for next year with 12 more to sign).  This is unfortunate for some Rangers fans as they feel their team needs a leadership shake up.  But in order to get Sundin, they would have had to drastically re-organize their team.  A tough choice.

Interesting news all around.  Does this mean Vancouver can give the ‘C’ to a real captain?  And not a goalie?

Interesting take Adam. Thanks. I was kinda busy the last 2 days. I will write something about it later and maybe a Ranger column as well.

In the end, he did what was best for him. I can’t get upset at that.

You really can’t. The Rangers just didn’t have the cap room/roster spots available for him. Plus to get him, they would have had to shuffle their roster way too much.

But you had to think Sundin wanted to play in NY… They definitely have a better shot at the cup than Vancouver.
