NBC and NHL scheduling gurus = epic FAIL

February 3, 2009   ·   Adam   ·   Jump to comments

It’s official:  NBC (using it’s flex schedule system) has officially chosen to show the Philadelphia Flyers versus the New York Rangers (in NY) on February 15, 2009.  Why is this an epic FAIL then?  Because NBC has chosen this match-up over the one showcasing the New Jersey Devils and the San Jose Sharks.

Obviously going with the safe choice in showing the game with the two largest market/audiences, and they are continuing with their tradition of only showing games involving the Red Wings, Penguins, and Rangers

NBC (and the NHL) are passing up a great opportunity to showcase two teams who have been very hot as of late, and may even be a **potential** Stanley Cup Final match-up.   The game may even be an exciting one considering the style of play between the two teams.

Furthermore, this is going to be the last opportunity to showcase the Sharks on NBC again.

To be frank, this is just bad for the league to show a certain set of teams by default. It shows that the league has become so enamored in getting ratings and marketing a few select players that they have lost the overall objectivity concerning the promotion of the game of hockey here in the USA.

In my opinion, merit should be rewarded.  Show the best, and make it an honor to play on the big stage.  The same can also be said regarding the All-Star Game… Don’t reward mediocrity because a team features Crosby, Malkin, or because it comes from New York or Detroit.  It’s the same old story from the NHL…

Glad you posted, I was wondering what happened with this game cause I knew the deadline was today to announce the flex.

Can’t say I’m very surprised, it’s too shortsighted an approach to show the same handful of teams. Especially since a NJ-SJ game involves both coasts and NYR-PHI is all one market.

The Sharks are probably relieved at not having to play a game at 9:30 WC time though.

Well, the game is in NJ as well. So it wouldn’t technically be a 930am game… if they got used to the time change.

But yeah, the league is shooting itself in the foot with it’s favoritism (calling it marketing anymore is a bit of a farce). NJ and SJ aren’t the only teams screwed by this, and hit hurts the growth of lesser known franchises.

Well… hopefully they’ll be forced to show some Devils-Sharks games in June if you know what I mean… *knocks on wood*

This is news? NBC has not delivered. I miss ESPN/ABC.

I would add more but I’m too disgusted for words.

I would like them to go to Fox and ditch Versus altogether.

The NHL should show a game on FOX itself one night a week. Preferably Monday night.

Then show additional games on FX.

Screw ESPN… but at least give them the rights to re-broadcast portions of games. This would allow them more highlights for recaps and analysis.
