Live Blog: Blackhawks at Flames Game 6

April 27, 2009   ·   Derek Felix   ·   Jump to comments

12:06 AM: Here are our three stars from tonight’s Blackhawks’ Game 6 ouster of the Flames:

3rd Star-Patrick Kane, Chi (power play goal, assist in 14:12)

2nd Star-Dustin Byfuglien, Chi (empty net goal, 2 assists, +1 in 17:14)

1st Star-Nikolai Khabibulin, Chi (43 saves incl. 33 the first 2 periods)

12:03 AM: The Bulin Wall stops 43 in eliminating the Flames in six games. Chicago will now await their second round opponent. Right now, it looks to be  the Canucks with Anaheim getting two goals in the second leading the Sharks 3-1 late in the second. Will San Jose rally or once again be labeled playoff chokers? I guess we’ll know soon enough.

Editor’s Note: If the Sharks cameback and won tonight and their series versus Anaheim, then the Blackhawks would then meet San Jose while the No.2 seeded Red Wings would face the 3rd seeded Canucks.

12:01 AM: The Hawks play keep away and kill more valuable time. Under 30 secs left. Their depth was the biggest reason I picked them to win in six. Wow. Looks like I nailed that one as Byfuglien hits the open net with a few ticks left sealing Calgary’s fate. Yet another opening round exit for the Flames. They have made the playoffs every season since that incredible run to the Cup Final in ‘04 but been knocked out early. Something needs to change.

Congrats to the Blackhawks! Tremendous to see this once proud Original Six franchise back in the WC Semis. Awesome stuff! Flame fans cheer loudly saluting their team as only classy fans could. They are tremendous. You are great!

12 AM: An Aucoin shot misses its target and the puck comes out. The Hawks get the puck deep and just force Jokinen into an icing. Yikes. Kiprusoff back in with almost a minute to go.

11:57 PM: Keenan pulls Kipper with over two left. Bertuzzi gets one decent chance but the Hawk D does a nice job in front helping Bulin out. He now covers up a loose puck and Keenan burns his timeout.

Chi 3 Cgy 1 1:56 left, 3rd

11:56 PM: Chicago has gone to a trap and so far, it’s paid off with Kane getting a decent chance in tight but Kipper got it without a problem. They also forced Calgary into a rare icing.

3:00 left, Hawks 3 Flames 1

11:54 PM: The Hawks again ice it. Shots are 9-4 Flames and 42-15 overall yet it doesn’t matter unless they score in a hurry.

Chi 3 Cgy 1 3:40 left, 3rd

11:53 PM: A good Langkow shot is repelled by Khabibulin, who just seems so locked in. How did he miss Bertuzzi’s marker early in the stanza? It came from an impossible angle.

11:51 PM:
Iginla wins the draw and Adrian Aucoin gets a chance but Khabibulin closes it up to get the whistle. Time is ticking down on the Calgary Flames.

Chi 3 Cgy 1 5:29 left, 3rd

11:49 PM: McGuire of course gushes over Martin Havlat who has been tremendous this series following a career 77-point season with six this series. He’s a UFA this summer. Man. How I wish the Rangers could get creative and bring him in. We have little scoring on our wings. Damn silly contracts to Gomez and Tin Man along with Rozy. Daymond Langkow has a shot blocked from a primary area in the slot. The Hawks have settled down and are doing a sound job defensively. Queeneville wisely uses his timeout following an icing to go over defensive strategy. His team is firmly in control.

Chi 3 Cgy 1 5:47 left, 3rd

11:46 PM: The crowd really cheered before the faceoff. They really are great fans as all Canadian fans are. I just love the energy. Now under 7 minutes left with their Flames still trailing by a pair.

11:45 PM: The last time the Blackhawks made Round 2, Jeremy Roenick was a household name in 1996 getting into a war of words with Patrick Roy, who referenced his Stanley Cup rings. We know who prevailed with Sir Patrick winning a third with the Avalanche.

11:43 PM: Chicago finally has a decent shift led by Byfuglien and Versteeg with who else but energizer Pahlsson. Maybe that can help get them going.

9:00 left, still Hawks by 2

SOG: Flames 38 Hawks 14

Update: Chi 3 Cgy 1, 7:44 left 3rd

11:41 PM: As the Hawks continue to sit back and ice pucks, the sense here is that if the Flames get one soon, they’ll get this thing tied.

11:39 PM: Flames come close but Bulin shuts the door with some help from Sami Pahlsson, who McGuire praises. He was great during the Ducks Cup run and now has been a positive influence for these Hawks.

11:38 PM: The guys again discuss Kipper’s bad luck. Particularly on Campbell’s first on the PP which changed direction. But he did make a big stop on Ladd keeping it 3-1. That’s workable especially with this Saddledome crowd amped up.

11:36 PM: We get our first stoppage with Chicago being outshot only by one (3-2) this period but it sure don’t feel that way.

Chi 3 Cgy 1 13:12 left, 3rd

11:35 PM: Another icing here on the Hawks, who have been pinned in more than not. They definitely can use a strong shift to turn the tide. Remember. A lot of these guys have never been in this pressure packed situation.

14:00 left, Chi 3 Cgy 1

11:33 PM: The crowd wants a holding call but doesn’t get it. Now the Bulin serenade begins. An Adam Pardy point shot just misses wide. Bulin looked screened. The refs say a clear went off the boards first. So no penalty on the Hawks despite hopes.

11:30 PM: The goal comes just 54 ticks in and the Flames are coming now. They get an icing. So no match-up for Queeneville’s guys. Not long after, Andrew Ladd is denied by Kiprusoff. Big stop there! Flames are buzzing here. Fans are pumped.

11:27 PM: Scooooooooore!!!!!! Bertuzzi stuns Bulin with a sharp angle roof job! Wow! Big big momentum swing.

Cgy Bertuzzi 1 ES (Leopold) 0:54, 3rd

Chi 3 Cgy 1

11:25 PM: Gotta give these Calgary fans props. They’re chanting “Go Flames Go, Go Flames Go” hoping for the team to continue to work at a great comeback. Here we go!

11:21 PM: The talk during intermission at the round table is about the job status of Keenan who most likely will get the axe if the Flames don’t mount a comeback. Matt Barnaby takes Bertuzzi and Cammalleri, who led Calgary with 39 goals the regular season but has only one this series to task. Love the intensity from a guy not known for it in Jumbo Joe, who probably got the decision against willing combatant Getzlaf. He needs to continue to lead if the Sharks are to reach a Game 7.

11:15 PM: Corey Perry knots it at one in the Battle of California. They’re 1-1 after one with the Sharks again looking to extend the series. The league announced the Vezina finalists. No real surprise here as Boston’s Tim Thomas along with Minny’s Niklas Backstrom and Columbus rookie Steve Mason get the nod for the top goalie to be announced at the NHL Awards in Vegas. As great a story as it would be for Mason to win, I kinda am leaning towards Thomas because the B’s were incredible. All three are superb choices.

Not making the cut was Roberto Luongo, Pekka Rinne or Cam Ward.

11:12 PM: Here’s the scoring summary thus far:

1.Kane 2 PP (Byfuglien, Versteeg) 2:20, 1st

2.Burish 1 ES (Byfuglien, Versteeg) 10:11, 1st

3.Campbell 1 ES (Kane) 14:57, 2nd

11:08 PM: Troy Brower subs in and wins a defensive draw and Keith and the Chicago D do the rest killing off the final eight seconds.

End 2nd Blackhawks 3 Flames 0

SOG for 2nd: Chi 4 for a 2 period total of 11

Cgy 17 for a 2 period total of 33

Utterly ridiculous.

11:07 PM: Bulin makes save No.33 easily gloving away a Conroy try from 45 feet out off a turnover forced by David Moss.

11:05 PM: Under 2 minutes left and still 3-zip! The Hawks are a lot more loose than the guys from Alberta and anyone can see why.

SOG Update: Cgy 32 Chi 11

So much for it mattering. Under a minute to go in this period.

11:03 PM: Bulin stops Conroy. McGuire notes between the benches that the Flames look discouraged. I’m guessing it’s a similar defeated look that the hapless Rangers had in yesterday’s forgettable debacle. They better come ready with it all on the line tomorrow night!

11:02 PM: Now a strong Sharp effort nearly leads to a fourth goal. But Kipper sprawls across to rob Kane.

Update: Sharks take an early 1-0 lead on the Ducks with Michalek getting the tally.

11 PM: Here’s the official scoring on Campbell’s PPG:

Chi Campbell 1 PP (Kane) 14:57

That makes the Hawks 2 for 2 on the PP while the Flames are 0 for 3. Biggest difference along with the Bulin Wall. It’s also noted that the Flames ranked 4th on the PK during the season but Chicago has burned them for seven. No Robyn Regehr and Phaneuf hurts.

10:57 PM: And with nothing happening, the Hawks connect. Brian Campbell lets one go and it might have hit someone in front. A crusher for the Flames. Looks to be Campbell’s first in 50 games as it deflected off something. 3 goals on 9 shots and you can’t really fault Kipper. But when you’re facing elimination, that is one ugly stat line.

Chi 3 Cgy 0 5:03 left, 2nd

10:55 PM: Calgary nabbed for too many men. Yikes. What an awful line change. Can’t happen when you’re down two and facing elimination. They are up like 21 or 22 in shots yet this could be a killer.

10:53 PM: The Hawks finally get going with a couple of opportunities including a near miss from sniper Patrick Sharp, who sent one wide.

10:51 PM: SOG: Flames 27 Hawks 8

10:49 PM:
Now Bulin dives on top to deny Jokinen from in close off a tricky Iginla shot. He really is on tonight.

Chi 2 Cgy 0 9:13 left, 2nd

10:48 PM: Wow! Bertuzzi and Co. get some excellent opportunities but Khabibulin is so strong down low that he denies both Bertuzzi and Cammalleri to keep the Hawks still up a deuce. He’s been a Flame killer since his Winnipeg days with 29 wins- most against any opponent. Of course, that included that great Cup Final for Tampa Bay.

10:46 PM: As this game continues, my Toronto pal Kayla informs me that Thornton and Getzlaf dropped the gloves off the bat fighting to a draw. Wow! That must’ve been cool.

10:44 PM: Well, the Flames are now 0 for 3 and still trail by two. The Sharks and Ducks Game 6 are underway. Can Joe Thornton and Game 5 OT hero Patrick Marleau stave off elimination again?

Chi 2 Cgy 0 12:30 left, 2nd

10:40 PM: The feed’s back up and Calgary has another power play. So far, nothing yet. Of course, no Dion Phaneuf doesn’t help much. He’s got that cannon from the point. But at this point, injuries are meaningless. The good teams find a way. Penalty almost done.

SOG: Calgary 23, Chicago 8

10:37 PM: McGuire notes that Iginla is getting doubleshifted by Keenan. But again, the Hawks are able to get Keith and Seabrook on. Great discipline. Now the stream looks to have frozen. Hopefully, it gets fixed or I find a new one.

10:35 PM: Now some good attack here by Calgary with Nystrom getting some good chances but the Bulin Wall says no. I like how the Flames have attacked but they must get the next goal.

10:34 PM: The Flames got one weak stuff try and then a clear. That’s just not going to cut it. Penalty easily killed off.

10:33 PM: The Flames start quickly drawing a power play. Kind of a touchy call on Dave Bolland.

10:32 PM: The second is about to begin. McGuire alludes to the fact Calgary pushed back which is much better than their reaction in a blowout Game 5 loss. Here we go!

10:29 PM: Intermission discussion ranged from ugly pregame antics like suspended thug Donald Brashear used before KOing Blair Betts early in Game 6 to John Tortorella owning Larry Brooks yet again when the feisty NY Post writer continued to pester him about Sunday’s suspension. Tort basically embarrassed him. The press does have a job to do but they aren’t entitled to everything and that was the coach’s point he drove home. He didn’t curse but made his point which you know a Scrooge like Brooks will use in tomorrow’s NY Post instead of focusing on Game 7. Brooks’ own personal agenda is appalling. He’s not professional. I don’t care how many years he’s covered the game.

10:23 PM: One of the disappointments in this series has been none other than Keenan fave Todd Bertuzzi, whose silly elbow was detected leading to Kane’s PPG. He has just one assist so far. He’s never been a postseason performer. So, really no shock here. It’s up to the big guns of Iginla, Jokinen and Mike Cammalleri.

10:21 PM: Issues with the feed online. Hopefully, I can get one that works. Okay. Now it’s back up! :-)

10:15 PM:
The Flames have a nice shift late with vet Craig Conroy creating but don’t score the big late goal to swing momentum.

End 1 Period: Chicago 2 Calgary 0

SOG: Blackhawks 7 Flames 16

Scoring Summary: Kane 2 PP (Byfuglien, Versteeg) 2:20

Burish 1 ES (Byfuglien, Versteeg) 10:11

10:13 PM: Under a minute left and McGuire praises Joel Queeneville for quick line changes to get the match-up of Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook against Iginla.

10:11 PM: McGuire raves about Byfuglien and how much he’s improved. Amazing that he went from a D to a forward making a smooth transition. He joked about the big Russian’s weight being 270 when drafted and Kane overheard and corrected saying 260. Great stuff!

10:09 PM: Another decent chance for Calgary but Jokinen’s wrister from the circle is calmly tucked away by Bulin.

10:08 PM: SOG are Calgary 13, Chicago 5 but two have gone in. Neither could be faulted on Miikka Kiprusoff though. The Flames just have to keep attacking as they have gotten better as this period’s gone on.

10:06 PM: 4:30 left 1st, Chi 1 Cgy 0

10:04 PM: Flames get their best chance on a great Iginla backhand pass sending in Olli Jokinen but Bulin shuts the door. 11 saves and counting. The six consecutive starts this series are the most he’s had all year notes Chris Cuthbert.

10:02 PM: Byfuglien and Calder hopeful Versteeg assisted on both their goals. That’s been a good line with Burish. Pierre McGuire notes that Kane has more jump than he had earlier in the series. Most def. Now they ponder if Iginla should drop ‘em to spark the Flames. I wouldn’t as they need him out there.

10 PM: Flames have a 10-3 edge in shots but Nikolai Khabibulin has been steady including a big stop on a point blast from Cory Sarich. He did leak a couple of rebounds but Calgary couldn’t pounce. They are attacking more. Must continue or it will be the golf course.

9:58 PM: Chicago goal Burish 1 (Byfuglien, Versteeg) 10:11

9:57 PM: Great shift here by Nystrom has the Flames buzzing but they don’t capitalize. Then the Hawks comeback and score to make it 2-0. Great play by Dustin Byfuglien to setup Adam Burish. Horrible defense by the Flames with no one taking Burish.

9:55 PM: It’s noted on TSN that the Flames have scored just twice on the PP with Jarome Iginla getting both. So far, not much happening as an aggressive Chicago PK kills it off against their former coach.

9:53 PM: Martin Havlat 2 for tripping 6:44.

9:51 PM: Kris Versteeg comes awfully close to making it 2-0 but rings one off the post. For sure, Calgary is flat and I can’t figure out why. They need to be sharper. There’s a penalty to the Hawks handing them a power play. Here’s a chance to get even.

9:49 PM: I have looked in on this big Game 6 between the Blackhawks and Flames and decided to some live blogging. So far, it’s 1-0 with Patrick Kane netting a power play goal for his second giving Chicago the early lead. Calgary must win to stay alive. The home team’s won every game.
