Rangers and Habs make blockbuster trade

June 30, 2009   ·   Hasan   ·   Jump to comments

Less than 24 hours before free agency, the Rangers and Canadiens made big-time news with a trade that was just announced a half-hour ago.  New York traded center Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenseman Mike Busto to Montreal for winger Chris Higgins, defensemen Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.

Clearly the key players in this deal are Gomez and Higgins.  Glen Sather did something that seemed near impossible, clearing mega capspace probably so he can get a new toy like Dany Heatley or Marian Hossa, among available big names.  Gomez proceeded to wear out his welcome in just two seasons apparently, about the same time frame as Bobby Holik did.

I’m not sure I entirely get what Les Habitantes are doing, although I do admit the market for centers is pretty dry so Gomez - even with a $7 million a year deal through 2013-14 – has some value for a team looking for centers.  Especially since Montreal’s had bad luck trying to import UFA’s in recent years.  Higgins had a down year last year and is UFA after this season so maybe they didn’t think he would stick around.

I’m sure Derek’ll have more detail on this later, especially since I have no idea about any of the other players in the deal except for the immortal ex-Sabre Janik.

Nice job! I was analyzing it more. I kinda think it makes sense for both clubs as the Habs needed to replace Koivu and the Rangers had to clear space and got a solid forward who can do lots well.

Not sure what to think of the rest.
