Rangers sign Gaborik, Gionta goes to Montreal

And the moves just keep on coming!

Guess we now know why Glen Sather was anxious to get rid of Scott Gomez and his cap-killing deal.  So he could turn right around and offer another cap-killing deal to Marian Gaborik.  Oh, it’ll be a great acquisition for the 15 games a year he plays…unfortunately he’s getting paid as a star for 82 games over the next five years.  Maybe Sather’s still having nightmares over Gaborik’s six-goal game a couple years back.  Well at least Derek’ll be happy that the Rangers didn’t give up the farm for Dany Heatley, who as it turned out did not accept that trade to Edmonton after all.

Almost as mind-boggling (yet again), the Canadiens continue to buy a roster by bringing in Brian Gionta for 5 years, $25 million.  Geez louise, I love Gionta as much as the next guy but man, $5 million a year for a guy that’s averaged 20 goals the last two seasons and under 25 goals the last three?  They’re really betting a lot on the Gionta-Gomez reunion being a smash hit.  I guess the next move for Bob Gainey is to get nametags for all the new acquisitions.  Gionta represents the fifth big-name player the Habs have either signed or traded for in the last 24 hours including Gomez.

UPDATE: Well now the Devils purge is almost complete as John Madden has also left on a one year, $2.75 million deal for what might fast be becoming a Stanley Cup favorite in the Blackhawks.  Good luck Johnny, it’s been fun but probably best for all concerned that you’re no longer here.

Good stuff. If it was the original price, I would’ve loved the Gaborik move. But I guess some things never change. If he stays healthy, it will be worth it. But that remains to be seen.

Yes. Habs overpaid for Gio but that’s the market. What else is new?

Wonder where Kovy goes. Pitt II?

5 years, $25 million for Gionta…have fun with that Montreal!

Gaborik is surely a roll of the dice…IF healthy, this is worth it, but asking that is like asking to hit bettering 1 number on a roulette table.
