Rangers come to terms with Boyle

July 8, 2009   ·     ·   Jump to comments

The Rangers reached terms with recently acquired Brian Boyle, per the Ranger team site. Salary info isn’t available yet. I’m just guessing it’s a one-year deal to see what the former 2003 26th overall pick can do after being acquired from the Kings for a third round pick next year.

The 24 year-old Boyle will be expected to supplant Blair Betts as the club’s fourth line center. However, he could get stiff competition from rookie Brodie Dupont. Let’s hope they don’t just hand a 2003 failure (Hugh Jessiman II???) the spot. Figure that not to be the case under John Tortorella in boot camp.

This past season, Boyle took part in a career high 28 games posting four goals and an assist while racking up 42 penalty minutes (career best). The former Boston College product adds size listed at 6-7, 252. He can drop the gloves if needed. The question is can he have more of a role on Broadway than in Hollywood? Considering that they parted with a third round pick, the Rangers are counting on it.

Interesting enough, TSN has him at a lighter 225. Which is it? Guess we won’t find out for a while.
