Devils sign Murphy

July 18, 2009   ·   Derek Felix   ·   Jump to comments

There’s really not a whole lot going on this weekend. The Devils are having an open day of Rookie Camp later this morning in Newark and we hear 2Man pal Scott Mackie will be in attendance as too will Battle originator/Puck The Media’s Steve Lepore.

Noteworthy from camp was former 2008 No.1 pick Mattias Tedenby (seen above) scoring four in a 7-2 White squad scrimmage win over Black. 2009 first rounder Jacob Josefson also tallied. Here’s a little more on Tedenby, who spoke to Devils’ radio voice Matt Loughlin about the experience along with what he needs to work on as well as when he’ll come over:

Loughlin interviews Tedenby

As for news off the ice, the Devils made a signing yesterday adding vet defenseman Cory Murphy, who agreed to a two-way deal. No harm in this move as Murphy has some decent offensive skills. He put up 15 points in 25 games with the Lightning last season. Not too shabby.

Guess it depends on what kinda impression he makes in camp with Jacques Lemaire and the staff. Maybe he can split time with Andy Greene as a sixth on the back end. And the thing with Murphy, who’s 31 is capable of manning the point on a power play. He has a decent shot. In fact, four of his five tallies came via the man-advantage while also adding six helpers- meaning 10 of his 15 points for the Bolts were on the PP. Not bad for a guy who couldn’t get a sniff with the Panthers.

So, this is a low risk deal with a potential reward. That he took a two-way contract means they can designate him to Lowell if needed. Might depend on the development of prospects Matt Corrente and Tyler Eckford.

This is the kind of calculated move we’ve seen in the past by Lou Lamoriello. One which wouldn’t have been bad for the Rangers to explore instead of taking up even more cap space by adding either Sergei Zubov or Mathieu Schneider.

Oh well. Some things never change.

I like the Murphy signing too, god knows the Devils need a presence from the blueline that can help on the power play in the worst way. And he’s a right-handed d-man too, which we also lack.
