Devils Proud to be Jersey’s Team

They’re Jersey’s team. That’s the message the New Jersey Devils have been sending to their supporters as well as the other New Jersey team who used to share a building.

We’re talking about the Nets who remain in Izod Center down in the dumps while their former tenant plays in the state of the art Prudential Center in downtown Newark. In a Star-Ledger editorial appropriately entitled The Nowhere Nets, it’s duly noted how the basketball team has dissed their own state:

It’s not enough that the Nets keep insisting they’re moving to Brooklyn (call us when a shovel actually scratches the dirt over there), but now the Nets are removing “New Jersey” from their road uniforms for the upcoming basketball season.

Basically, they’re saying: “When we’re in New Jersey, we’d rather be in Brooklyn, and when we’re on the road, we don’t want anyone to know we’re still from New Jersey.

Sadly, that sums up greedy owner Bruce Ratner’s Brooklyn pipe dream which disses the Nets’ Jersey roots that have been part of the NBA franchise since they merged from the ABA in 1976. That’s over 30 years in the Interstate. Too bad they act embarrassed by it. We’ve been to NJ plenty of times and it’s a nice place to live. A little more laid back than where we’re from. I have good friends over there who always treat us like family. Must be that whole Sopranos thing.

Unlike the Nets, the Devils are proud to represent the Garden State. They wear it with pride and have been running a cool slogan that takes a stab at the basketball team.

We proudly wear our state on our jerseys,” the caption pronounced, the bold words running beneath a photo of the hockey team’s NJ logo.

Good for them! Someone should tell the Rat that owns the Nets.

I’ve seen one of those electronic billboards just before the Newark exit on I-78, dare I say it’s one of the best marketing strokes this franchise has ever come up with.

Thanks to the Nets the Devils are going to get a lot more sports fans gravitating to them who want something Jersey to latch onto and are sick of the Giants and Jets playing in Jersey without taking the name and now the Nets’ nonsense.
