Holy cow, a throwback night?!

Fans usually are nostalgic about the good ol’ days and Devil fans seem to be more so than most – evidence the fan furor over their goal song, which finally changed back to Rock and Roll Part II last year to almost everyone’s delight.

In that vein, people have also clamored to see the old red, green and white jerseys. On March 17, they will get that wish too – when the Devils play the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday on St. Patrick’s Day, the Devils will be donning their original uniform. Which I suppose will make Irish Brendan Shanahan feel young again since he’s one of the few players on the roster that have actually worn said uniform (other than Martin Brodeur, I think).

I have to say, between this and the billboards Derek posted about a few days ago I keep being more impressed with the Devils’ new marketing department by the week. Granted, I wasn’t one that grew up with the red, green and white and I like the current look better. I also like the fact that Lou hasn’t sold out to the third jersey Devil, so to speak (I believe Detroit’s the only other team without a third jersey currently). But it is nice to acknowledge your heritage and it’ll be nice to see them in their original uniforms for a night, especially playing against the defending Stanley Cup champs.  Devils GM Lou Lamoriello acknowledged this fact:

“The original red, green and white jerseys are a part of our history here in New Jersey,” Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement.  “We have always been an organization that takes great pride in its tradition.  This is something we believe our fans will enjoy for that one special night.”

So now we have one more little thing to look forward to this season.

Most excellent. Imagine if they ran it on Halloween. ;-)
