Legend Of Marty Looks To Continue Tonight
October 16, 2009 · Derek Felix · Jump to comments
In case you missed it via our twitter, we’ve finally updated the Legend Of Marty. A fitting tribute to the all-time winningest netminder who’s done it all for the Devils, winning three Cups, four Vezinas plus Olympic gold for Canada.
Martin Brodeur is also closing in on Terry Sawchuk’s once thought unbreakable shutout record, needing two to tie and three to shatter this season. But as the 16-year future Hall Of Famer has proven, records are made to be broken. Even if nobody likely comes close to the 560 regular season victories and counting he owns after finally surpassing idol Patrick Roy last St. Patty’s Day. That MB30 got to have breakfast and talk with a former nemesis prior to matching the record in his hometown Montreal was all the more fitting for a man whose consistency boggles.
Tonight, fresh off a three-game win streak, he and the Devils face the team who he got hurt against last year, missing extended time for the first time ever. The Thrashers pay a visit to The Rock. It’s their first game since a 4-2 loss last Saturday to the Senators. So, they should be very fresh for a Devil club that ran the table going 3-0 against Tampa, Florida and Washington even if two came via the shootout which Marty owns. He’s won the most skill competitions, leading Henrik Lundqvist by two or three.
The Thrashers have only played three times going 2-1 but should at least present a challenge with the always dangerous Ilya Kovalchuk along with new Russian linemate Nik Antropov, plus emerging Bryan Little. The Devs have won seven of the past 10 (7-1-2) dating back to Jan.12, 2007. They’ll look to keep it going tonight.
David Clarkson (2-3-5) is a point-per-game and Brian Rolston and Rob Niedermayer have clicked, giving New Jersey other scoring options to help ZZ Popp. Zach Parise has only has lit the lamp once. Figure that to change. One change to Jacques Lemaire’s lineup is Cory Murphy, who takes the place of Andy Greene on the blueline. Though it’s hard to say why. Especially with the Devils undefeated with Greene, who performed admirably with two helpers including setting up the miraculous Travis Zajac goal with a second to spare, saving them from an 0-3 start. Instead, Murphy gets another shot.
The game can be seen on MSG+ while Islanders-Sabres are on MSG++. This cause Knick preseason hoops is a must along with a shameless Danillo Gallimari cheesy promo. What can ya expect from Dolan? The man’s as selfish as it gets. The hockey teams should be on MSG and MSG+ with his basketball team shifted. Oh well.
