Devils

With eight defensemen on the roster and highly touted Matthew Corrente also competing for a spot in camp, something eventually had to give.  Finally it did, when hard-hitting Vitaly Vishnevski was placed on waivers.  After Vishnevski cleared waivers, GM Lou Lamoriello announced that the 28-year old defenseman would be playing in Russia this season.

According to Tom Gulutti’s Fire and Ice blog, the departure was not acrimonious.  “He expressed a desire to go back to Russia for personal reasons and I respect that,” Lamoriello said. “We didn’t want this to develop into a situation September, so we placed him on waivers now and this will allow him to go play there.”

The Devils will be getting cap relief from Vishnevski’s contract, and also retain his NHL rights.  There was no immediate word on whether he would be paid the $3.6 million remaining on his deal, but hey so long as his money’s off the cap that’s management’s problem, right?

Vishnevkski followed in the footsteps of Karel Rachunek and Sergei Brylin, Devils last season now playing overseas.  Without Vishnevski the Devils’ defensive core looks like this:

Paul Martin - Bryce Salvador

Colin White - Johnny Oduya

Mike Mottau - Andy Greene

Sheldon Brookbank - Matthew Corrente

I am going to Europe next week, and seeing as the Krawczyk/Devils sculpture is slated for placement at the Prudential Center on September 6th, I have decided to post the remaining images of the artwork. :)

Enjoy!

After the last post, I realized I could have gone with: “can someone give me a hand?” as the header… but oh wells.

Anyways, I figured it’s time for an early morning Sunday edition preview showing the making of the Devils’ latest signing!

Here it is:

Standing next to the leg is Jon Krawczyk, the sculpture’s creator.

Stay tuned to the Battle for more updates this week!

I’m a few days late but the Rangers have brought back forward Fredrik Sjostrom for another year. The 25 year-old Swede came over from the Coyotes last Feb.26 before the trade deadline along with Josh Gratton, David LeNevue plus a 2009 fifth round pick for Marcel Hossa and Al Montoya.

In 18 games as a Ranger, he tallied two goals and registered an assist during the postseason. Overall, Sjostrom played in a combined 69 regular season games with Phoenix and New York registering a career high 12 goals and nine helpers for 21 points along with 22 penalty minutes.

Expect the speedy left wing who provides energy to shifts to be a fixture on the checking line with Blair Betts. As for who plays alongside them, that could just depend on camp where a few prospects will be pushing club enforcer Colton Orr for ice-time. Figure former first rounders Lauri Korpikoski and Hugh Jessiman to be in the mix.

Oddly enough, one of the dreams I had last night saw the 2003 first rounder from Dartmouth finally debuting for the Rangers and netting a goal off some hard work behind the net before coming out and going to the backhand five-hole. I then came away impressed with his skating which had improved and liked the power move he made to finish. Keep in mind this was a dream and most of mine never seem to make logical sense.

Still. Who wouldn’t want to see Jessiman do exactly that finally after five years? ;-)

As Hasan noted in his previous entry, the three locals’ preseason schedules are finally out. So, be sure to check them out. The Rangers host Ottawa on September 22 at the Garden completing a home and home with the Sens with the exhibition season starting Sept.20. They’ll play just six games including a couple versus the Devils before heading to Prague for a two-game series with the Lightning Oct.4-5.

For more Blueshirts, check out Bobby Sanguinetti’s NHL blog from Rangers Youth Camp with recently drafted third rounder Ryan Hillier.

Prediction markets are becoming a useful tool in determining future events, whether they be elections, to geopolitical actions.  Essentially, it allows people to invest according to their individual research, opinions, etc, while developing an overall consensus on market performance.  The more players, the more accurate it becomes.

It’s typically better than a poll because shares can be bought or sold, allowing the market to track team performance and adjust accordingly.

So here it is… invest wisely!

As the days of summer continue to drag on, it appears the Devils have made the majority of their player movements and transactions.  While the management continues to say that they are still looking to acquire a much needed defenseman, it looks as if they are taking their time.

Essentially, it looks as if Lou wants to see what the team he has now is capable of.  So let’s take a look at the Devils current Depth.

Left Wing Center Right Wing

P. Elias                   B. Rolston                B. Gionta

Z.  Parise                T. Zajac                   J. Langenbrunner

J. Pandolfo             J. Madden                D. Zubrus

M. Rupp                 B. Holik                  D. Clarkson

Forward Depth

R.  Pelley (C),  N. Bergfors (RW),  F. Federov (please stay in Lowell) , B. Tallackson (RW), and P. Vrana (LW)

Defense

P. Martin        J. Oduya

B. Salvador    C. White

M.  Mottau    A.  Greene

Defense Depth

S. Brookbank, M. Fraser, M. Corrente, T. Eckford

Goaltending

M. Brodeur

K. Weekes

Goaltending Depth

S. Clemmenson

J. Frazee

As you can see, the Devils have manged to take what worked from last season, and only make minor adjustments.  Bringing in Rolston helps on the first line because his shot is what a player like Gionta needs.  Theoretically, a playmaker like Elias can feed to him, and Gionta picks up the rebound.  Theoretically of course.

The 2nd line goes back to where it had it’s best chemistry (PZL, “pretzel line”), and hopefully Zajac will put his “mediocre” sophmore season, and blossom into the center the Devils need him to be.

The 3rd line remains the Rock of the team.  Madden, Pandolfo, and Zubrus have proven themselves to be highly effective in the checking, and even scoring roles.  Consistency is key with this group, and their track record is fairly good in this regard.  Hell, before Jay got injured in the game against Dallas, this line (sans Zubrus if my memory is correct) had some of the best production in this last season, hell to my knowledge, the best ever!

With the injection of Holik on the 4th line, along with youth like David Clarkson, and our good ol’ boy Michael Rupp, this line can provide physicality, as well as some short term checking capacity.  Hell, the Devils can finally roll 4 legit lines and cover all their bases.

On Defense, the Devils have mainstays in Martin, Oduya, White, and Salvador.  The last two spots become very iffy.  Mike Mottau, a Rangers reject, proved himself quite well in the Devils red last season, and has earned the chance to play in the starting lineup again.  Greene however… with guys like Matt Corrente bucking for a spot in the lineup… he may have to earn his spot in the lineup.

My view on the D-situation is that we have some expendable assets.  I would like to see Corrente make the lineup, and the only way for him to achieve that is by playing better than Mottau and Greene in camp.  But if he can do it, then more power to him.  His development is far more important than the career of Mike Mottau.  You don’t let players like Corrente rot in developmental hell if they prove to be ready right now.

As for Fedor Federov… I for one feel he has no place on this team.  There just isn’t any room… But!  4th line in place of Rupp is a possibility… a slight one.

All in all, the Devils are fairly stacked.  Their depth is not an issue… but the quality of their primary talent is still in doubt.  Especially on D.  Hence the rumours that Lou may still be looking for a D-man to put the team over the top.

But the way things are… it may be best to wait and see how things proceed.  With Marty in net, a mediocre D-corps becomes above-average when stopping goals against… but getting them to help with the transitional game (going from being on D to the attack) is where their weakness may be.  A good outlet pass or blue-line puck carrier is highly valuable.  And the loss of Scott Gomez highlighted that weakness immensly (cuz he used to just do the work himself).

Are the Devils a cup contender?  In my opinion… no.  Not yet.  But they are going to be as good or better than last year.

Here it is, our first peek at the Devils’ new sculpture for the Prudential Center:

This here is the right hand of the sculpture before it’s final assembly.

Following up on the story a few weeks ago, Jon Krawczyk has sent me some photos of his most recent work involving his favorite NHL team: The New Jersey Devils.

A former resident of Boonton Twp, Jon now lives in Malibu, California working as a professional sculptor.  His most recently assembled creation, which shows a hockey player taking a slap shot is constructed from polished stainless steel, and will stand close to 3 stories tall.  It will be sited at the corner of Mulberry St. and Edison Pl. in Newark (the corner closest to Newark Penn Station).

I will post more photos every few days in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned.

Also, you can view the rest of Jon’s work here at his website: site

While Newark may not be known for it, it is home to many amazing sculptures on its many public properties (including some by Gutzon Borglum, the man behind Mt. Rushmore).  Today, it is being reported in the Star Ledger that well-known sculptor and Devils fan, Jon Krawczyk, will be providing a sculpture for the Prudential Center’s Edison Pl. and Mulberry St. corner (the corner closest to Newark Penn Station).  The sculpture is described as being a “3-story, brushed stainless steel hockey player” that will “reflect light like a diamond in all different colors.”

Krawczyk will be transporting his sculpture across the country from his Malibu, CA studio/workshop to Newark, NJ.  Along the way, he plans to stop by at some NHL arenas as a bit of a road trip.  The statue will be installed before the Devils Home Opener, but may be installed as early as September 6th, as he has a show at the Broadfoot & Broadfoot gallery in Manhattan.

Hopefully I can get a hold of some pictures of the sculpture so we can get a preview of it.

If you would like to see some of Jon Krawczyk’s other works, you can find them here at his site.

But 3 stories??  Wow… that’s gonna be huge.
